Weather and Tornados
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E1): Birmingham Meteorologist James Spann helps explain how tornadoes and hurricanes work. Anderson and Southern Research's Dr. Kathryn Lanier do experiments to show examples of mini-tornadoes in our own homes. Later, Kathryn and Anderson head to McWane Science Center for a pretty windy learning adventure!
Electricity and Batteries
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E2): Student host Nilah explores how batteries work with HudsonAlpha's Dr. Neil Lamb, then learns about all the work that goes into moving electricity from a power plant to your home and the STEM-related jobs that make it happen.
Genetics
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E3): Student host Anderson wonders why there are different colors of tomatoes, and Dr. Kathryn Lanier of Southern Research explains the essential role pigments play in shaping plant growth and development. Kathryn and Anderson explore pigment synthesis and talk about the importance of enzymes in this process. Later, Dr. Neil Lamb of HudsonAlpha and student host Nilah go on a treasure hunt and extract DNA from a strawberry!
Sound Waves
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E4): Student host Anderson and Southern Research's Dr. Kathryn Lanier investigate music and vibration. Then Keshia Williams of Alabama State University and student host Cruz explore sound waves. Careers segments include studio manager, engineer, and songwriter Spencer Coats at FAME recording studios, and professor of audiology Dr. Sridhar Krishnamurti at Auburn.
Cardiology
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E5): Student host Anderson and Dr. Kathryn Lanier of Southern Research visit a gym to understand how our physical activity determines our heart rate. Then Dr. Neil Lamb of HudsonAlpha and Nilah examine how the heart pumps blood through our bodies with a laboratory model. Career segments include a family physician and fitness club manager.
Food and Nutrition
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E6): Keshia Williams of Alabama State University and Cruz talk about how digestion works when he asks her what makes him feel full. Then Dr. Neil Lamb and Nilah do experiments to show how food releases the energy we run on. Career segments with James Beard Award-winning chef Frank Stitt and registered dietitian nutritionist Brittannie Chester.
Force and Energy
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E7): Anderson and Dr. Kathryn Lanier build a mousetrap car at Southern Research to explore the principles of force and changes in motion. Then they learn the science behind go-cart racing and give it a try. Ask the Expert to reveal how hummingbirds unique wings allow backward flight. This career segment features a process engineer in a car factory and a plant engineering maintenance technician.
Gravity and the Planets
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E8): An action-packed series featuring science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) experiments and explorations led by a team of Alabama STEM educators and youth hosts. Episodes feature both STEM demonstrations and spotlights on professionals working in STEM careers right here in Alabama.
Density
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E9): Anderson and Dr. Kathryn Lanier of Southern Research take a look at the science behind density. Through hands-on experiments and career exploration, Anderson learns why some objects sink and others float. Then Nilah and Dr. Neil Lamb of HudsonAlpha test their skills by stacking liquids in a delicious density column.
Geology and Earthquakes
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E10): Student host Nilah and HudsonAlpha's Dr. Neil Lamb take a look at the layers beneath our feet and explore the forces that shape the world around us. Then, Anderson and Southern Research's Dr. Kathryn Lanier use hands-on experiments to explore how the earth's plates move, what that does to the continents above, and the science behind earthquakes.
Food Science and Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E11): Student host Cruz and AMSTI’s Keshia Williams kick off the episode by making ice cream in a bag. Later, Anderson and Southern Research’s Dr. Kathryn Lanier take it one step further and serve up this creamy concoction in the coolest way possible – using liquid nitrogen!
Plant Science
Alabama STEM Explorers (S1E12): Student host Cruz wonders why his plant didn’t grow. AMSTI’s Keshia Williams helps Cruz learn what nutrients plants need survive and thrive. Then HudsonAlpha’s Dr. Neil Lamb and student host Nilah talk about the importance of plants and explore the difference between monocots and dicots.
