UTeach Alabama Campaign In Full Swing

UTeach Alabama: Empowering the Next Generation of STEM Educators

Alabama is taking decisive action to address its critical shortage of qualified STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) teachers through the innovative UTeach Alabama initiative. This program enables STEM majors to earn both their degree and a teaching certification simultaneously, without additional time or cost, thereby expanding career opportunities and strengthening the state’s educational workforce.

What Is UTeach Alabama?

UTeach Alabama is a statewide initiative designed to recruit and prepare undergraduate STEM majors for careers in secondary education. By integrating teacher preparation into existing STEM degree programs, students can graduate with both a STEM degree and a teaching certificate, effectively doubling their career options without extending their time in college.

The program is modeled after the nationally recognized UTeach program from The University of Texas at Austin, which has successfully partnered with numerous universities across the United States to enhance STEM teacher preparation.

Program Benefits

  • Dual Credentials: Earn a STEM degree and a teaching certificate concurrently, opening doors to careers in both industry and education.
  • Hands-On Experience: From the first semester, students engage in real classroom experiences, receiving mentorship and support throughout their training.
  • Financial Support: Opportunities for scholarships, stipends, and paid internships are available, allowing students to earn while they learn.
  • Career Flexibility: Graduates are equipped for diverse career paths in the classroom or the broader STEM workforce.

Impact on Alabama’s Education System

Alabama faces a significant shortage of qualified STEM teachers, particularly in underserved areas. UTeach Alabama aims to address this by increasing the number of well-prepared STEM educators in the state. The program is expected to produce approximately 530 highly qualified STEM teachers during its initial grant period, with an annual output of over 250 teachers once fully established.

Research indicates that UTeach-trained teachers tend to have longer classroom careers and are more likely to teach in Title I schools, which serve a high percentage of students from low-income families. Moreover, students taught by UTeach graduates often achieve higher levels of success in math and science.

Participating Universities

UTeach Alabama is implemented at seven partner universities across the state:

  • Alabama A&M University
  • Auburn University
  • Auburn University at Montgomery
  • Athens State University
  • University of South Alabama
  • The University of West Alabama
  • University of Alabama at Birmingham (UABTeach)

These institutions offer the UTeach program, providing students with the opportunity to pursue a STEM degree and teaching certification concurrently.

How to Get Started

If you’re a STEM major interested in exploring a rewarding career in education, UTeach Alabama offers a streamlined pathway to teaching. To qualify, you must be enrolled as a student and STEM major at one of the partner universities. The program typically begins with an introductory one-credit course, allowing you to experience teaching firsthand without a long-term commitment.
